To identify the right cap, check the stamped label on the collar or the underside of the lid. HeatShield caps manufactured after 2018 carry a part prefix: “HS-SC” for single-flue stainless, “HS-MC” for multi-flue, followed by the flue diameter in inches. A 13″ x 13″ terra cotta flue takes the HS-SC-1313; a 9″ round liner takes the HS-SC-9R. If the label’s rusted off, measure the flue opening at the crown, not the tile inside. The outer dimension matters for the mounting collar.

Signs Your HeatShield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s what you can safely check from the ground: whether the cap is present, whether it’s sitting level, and whether you can see daylight through rust holes in the lid. Use binoculars. Do not climb the roof.

What goes wrong with DIY cap replacement: the crown surface under the old flange is almost always deteriorated, and fastening into bad concrete guarantees the new cap loosens within a season.
