Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney face. DuraFlex galvanized caps in Dallas humidity typically show surface rust at year 4-6, but streaking means the cap seam has failed and water is channeling behind it. The rust is cosmetic until it isn’t; once water reaches the flue liner, freeze-thaw in our occasional hard winter opens cracks fast.
- Water in the firebox after rain. A properly seated DuraFlex cap sheds water past the flue edge. If you’re mopping the hearth, the cap is either dislodged, undersized for your flue, or missing its storm collar entirely. We’ve found caps sitting offset by two inches after wind gusts that wouldn’t register on a Dallas weather report.
- Debris or animal nesting material visible from below. Squirrels compress surprisingly small. If your cap mesh is torn or the cap is missing its screen entirely, you’ve got an open flue. In North Texas, chimney swifts nest March through July; a failed cap during that window means a federally protected obstruction you cannot legally remove yourself.
- Spalling brick or deteriorating mortar at the chimney top. Water entering through a failed cap saturates the crown and freezes. Dallas doesn’t freeze often, but when we do, it’s hard and fast. What goes wrong with DIY: DuraFlex caps require proper storm collar orientation and high-temp sealant at the flue interface. Most hardware-store silicone fails at 200°F; we use DuraFlex-specified RTV silicone rated to 500°F. More critically, Dallas roofs are steep, and chimney stacks concentrate wind.
